The Pain of Not Doing Something
The process of becoming organized is a lot like exercising. How so? Most of us hate to do it, but when we do, it feels great.
How many times have you thought about the benefits of going to the gym, but in the end you find yourself snacking and never leaving the house?
Personally speaking, this has happened to me plenty of times…
Well, organizing is similar. How many times have you thought about all of the benefits of being organized, but find yourself adding another pile to the clutter instead of downsizing or putting things away?
Why do we sit there when we know it will be better in the long run?
Here are a couple things to think about next time you need a little motivation.
It won’t be as hard as you thought.
Getting to the gym is half the battle. Once you’re there you have a great time and are glad that you came. It’s getting started that’s the hard part.
Similarly, putting off organizing the home office is causing you more grief and pain than if you would simply face up to it and get it done. Initially you may have to talk yourself into it, but in the end, you’ll find it is probably easier than you thought. And the satisfied feeling you’ll have afterward (not to mention the added bonus of finding documents when you need them) is worth every bit.
You’ll feel better about yourself when you do it.
You exercise to look better, feel better, get stronger, be healthier, lose weight and have more energy. There is also a great physical sensation you get from a workout and a great sense of accomplishment.
Organization is an exercise – an exercise of the mind and body. You organize your house so it will look and function better, but the calm serene that follows can reduce negative energy drains as well. You can eliminate items from your past that are holding you back or not contributing to your health. At the same time, you can make room for items and activities that do serve you. In the long run, you’ll be healthy, happy, productive, and relaxed in your improved atmosphere.
Give it a shot.
Once you actually start losing a little weight and seeing some results from all of your hard work at the gym, it’s even easier to get up early and go the next day.
Likewise, once you have a more organized house, it will feel like a weight is lifted off of your shoulders. It’s that sense of relief of finalllllllly addressing the problem. Just think about sitting on your bed, looking around and being able to…breathe. The closet is beautiful. The dresser is organized (and even dusted). Under the bed is clean. It’s taken you time to get organized, but you’ve created an oasis right there in your own home. And it’s totally worth it!
Here’s my question to you – when will you get started?
