How Fast Does Your Excitement Fade?
I hope you’re having a great weekend! So, last month my sister Tie (that’s her nickname since we were kids) ecstatically called me one evening to tell me she finally got a high-speed blender after having it on her wish list for months.
I can’t tell you how excited she was on the phone. Tie and I are so similar in personality – we both get reallllllly excited about things.
But don’t take my word for it, read the text message she sent me after we got off the phone last month:

Tie: I’m still sooooooooo excited!!!! I don’t think ill be able to sleep tonight! I keep thinking about everything im going to make tomorrow & the future in general
Alejandra: Hahahahaha yayyy!!! yea i feel like u jump started my excitement for the blender too! Im excited to make a smoothie tomorrow!
Tie: Hahah oh good!! Glad it helped! Gosh I’m sooooo excited for it! I’ll call u tomorrow 🙂 love you!!! ps – i love that youre my sister!!!

We are both so silly together with our excitement for things!
Anyway, fast forward to this past week, Tie called me to catch up. As were talking I casually asked her how the blender was and if she’s made any smoothies lately.
Her answer was “It’s good. The kids love smoothies in the morning.” Even though the blender was “good” and she’s happy with her purchase, you could instantly tell her excitement for the blender had died down.
Looking back at her text message it’s been awhile since she’s had the blender. And in that time, she’s gotten used to it, and now it’s just another appliance in the kitchen.
All of this “blender talk” got me thinking about buying things and our initial excitement. It’s like our excitement levels for new things are so high when we don’t own something yet. Then, once we buy something, our excitement levels die down over time as it becomes the new normal.
It’s pretty much safe to say this is true for most things we purchase.
Here’s something to think about: when you are shopping, don’t let your excitement take control. New things will always be exciting. After all, they’re new. However, after awhile, the excitement usually dies down and that thing you were once super excited about and bought out of excitement could turn into clutter, if you allow it to.
When you’re shopping, ask yourself if you realllllly need the thing you’re about to buy. Does it serve a purpose? Will you use it after the excitement wears off? Do you have anything else similar? Do you have space for it? Is it really necessary?
If you’re really going to use it, it serves a purpose unlike anything else you have, and you have space for it, then sure, go ahead. But if it’s going to sit in the house and collect dust just like the current one you may have, then you might want to reconsider the purchase.
If you’re having a tough time deciding what to do, try this: put the item down and leave the store. Wait a few days, maybe even a week. After time passes, see if you’re still interested in the item. If you are, go back to the store. If not, move on. But give yourself time to really think about if you need/want the certain something.
And that’s my thoughts for this week… 🙂
