The Pitfalls of Procrastination

I hope you had a great week! So, this week’s email is all about avoiding procrastination and just doing it.

If you got my email a few weeks ago, you know I went to the periodontist to get a deep cleaning recently.

Well, recently I had my follow-up check-in appointment to see how my teeth and gums are doing. And I’m happy to report both are improving… a lot!

At the end of Tuesday’s appointment, I had to schedule a follow-up appointment.

Ugh, I know- more dental work 🙁

Anyway, as I was sitting by the front desk making my next appointment with Michelle, the receptionist, she asked, “When can you come in next?”

So I looked at my calendar on my phone and saw plenty of times I could come in – one of the times was the very next week. In the back of my mind I was thinking, “Let’s just push this to December. I’ve been here enough in the past month.”

However, another part of me was saying, “Alejandra! Schedule the appointment SOON and get it over with! The sooner you do it, the sooner you’ll feel relieved! Plus, you’ll be healthier sooner!”

And so I did.

I listened to the voice and scheduled my appointment for next week instead of next month.

Why?

Because there’s no sense in procrastinating and pushing things out as far as possible just to avoid something you don’t want to do. When something has to get done, it just has to get done. And the sooner it gets done, the sooner you’ll feel relieved.

After all, who wants to continue to look at an appointment on their calendar (or task on their to-do list) week after week and continue to dread it each time they see it?

Not me!

Instead, get it on the calendar as soon as possible and get it over with. You’ll be glad you did after the appointment is over.

And what you certainly don’t want to do is avoid the appointment or task altogether, especially if it’s something vital like your health.

Avoiding the problem in its entirety only creates a bigger problem down the road.

And if you ask me, I’d rather deal with a smaller, less painful problem now than a bigger, more painful issue in the future.

That said, my lesson this week is to stop procrastinating what can be done sooner than later. There’s no sense in delaying something you don’t feel like doing right now to avoid pain. Chances are good that you won’t feel like doing it later either. So you might as well do it now and get it over with.

So that’s my two cents for this week.
