No matter how messy a home may be, there’s one item most people put back after they take it out.

ICE CREAM.

Now I know there are probably some people here that don’t always put the ice cream back in the freezer. Maybe you forget and it ends up melting on the counter and eventually thrown out. Or maybe you accidentally put it back in the fridge.

But if I had to guess, I’d say most people put the ice cream back where they found it or at least had good intentions to do so. Even the laziest person probably puts the ice cream back! As an ice cream lover myself (cherry chocolate chip is my favorite!), it’s almost too painful not to! The stakes are too high!

If you’re among this group of people who promptly puts the ice cream back in the freezer after each use, consider asking yourself “WHY?”

Why are you so dependable when it comes to maintaining ice cream organization but you can’t get yourself to consistently put other things back?

Maybe your answer is, “because I don’t want it to melt and go bad!” or, “because I don’t want to waste money/food!” or, “because I want to eat it again later!”

Whatever your justification is, why not apply that same mindset to everything else in the house?

What are the things you don’t always put back? Maybe it’s your shoes, your jacket, the mail, clothes, etc.

What’s the benefit (the pleasure) in putting these things away? Maybe it’s having:

  • ✅ clear walkways so no one trips over clutter,
  • ✅ more surface space for working so you can get stuff done easily,
  • ✅ less visual clutter in the house so you can focus,
  • ✅ an easier time finding what you need when you need it.

There’s always a benefit to be found in being organized. Find what that is for you and use that as your motivation for tidying up.

On the flip side, what’s the pain of not putting these things away (shoes, clothes, mail, etc.)? Maybe it’s feeling:

  • 🚫 frustrated every time you trip,
  • 🚫 guilt from all the tasks that haven’t been completed,
  • 🚫 behind in life which leads to feelings of inadequacy,
  • 🚫 confusion from the visual chaos.

Find what that pain is for you and again, use that as your motivation for getting organized.

There’s something about ice cream that makes most of us put it back where it belongs without a second thought.

Maybe it’s because putting the ice cream back has built-in urgency!

Be your own investigator and get curious on what drives you to do things. Nobody else knows you better than yourself.

Sending love,
Alejandra
