Hi everyone, it’s Alejandra from Home Organizing. The New Year is just a few weeks away which means that it’s time to start thinking about everything that you’re meant to accomplish this past year or wanted to accomplish this past year but didn’t get done for whatever reason. It’s time to start making that list of things that you want to do in the New Year to be able to grow and start like improving in certain areas of your life.
So this video is all about setting goals, organizing them, and then tracking them until you complete them. So before I share with you my system, I just want to say that this video is part of a larger playlist that a few other YouTubers and I have put together to bring you tips for the New Year on how to improve your life, improve your lifestyle, or your quality of life. So I will link to their video at the end of my video.
How to Set Goals
The first thing when you’re thinking about goal setting and you’re beginning to think about everything that you want to do and grow is to write everything down. So I’m a big believer that if you keep things inside your head, you’re not always going to remember them. You’re going to forget them in like six months from now. You’re not going to remember what your goals were for the year. And it’s also important to write them down so you constantly know what you’re working towards on a daily basis whether it’s work or personal life. You just constantly want to be reminded of everything that you’re working towards and how you want to grow and stuff.
What I do is I write down all of my goals. First, let me just back up a second. So, I used to make goals and set goals on an annual basis like come January, I would know everything that I want to accomplish for that year. And then I would revisit the goals a few times during the year but then at the end of the year, I would go back and I would say, “Well, some of these goals were realistic. Some of them were unrealistic.” Maybe I was an overachiever in one area and underachiever in another area. But I just felt like setting goals once a year wasn’t enough.
I switched to setting goals on a quarterly basis. So I’m going to set goals from like January through March and then in March, I’m going to set new goals for the next three months and so forth. So I’ll do it four times a year. And I find that at the end of the year, your goals are just more like realistic or like it just gives you a chance to revisit your goals to make them a little more realistic.
I write down all my goals and I categorize them. So I just came up with a template just like this with ten different categories of goals. So I’m just going to go through it. So family goals, personal development goals, personal development is like things that you want to work on for yourself. So maybe it’s like you want to quit smoking or quit drinking or you want to improve in public speaking, stuff like that.
Social goals, social goal is like stuff with friends, stuff with like just being social.
Health goals are like health and fitness, how you want to maybe exercise more or lose weight.
Financial goals like how much money you want to save.
Work goals, so what are your goals at work, maybe you’ve been trying to win a certain contract or you want to get a promotion or a raise or there’s an award you want to win.
Home goal is stuff that you want to work on inside your house. Maybe it’s like decorating a certain room or organizing a certain closet or just something inside the house that you want to improve.
Fun goals, so fun goal, this is something that is more for yourself. So something like pampering yourself more or taking better care of yourself like self-care or just treating yourself more often or putting yourself before other people or before work, stuff like that that a lot of women tend to just like let slide.
Spiritual goal is kind of self-explanatory.
Community goals, so this is like how you want to give back in your community like how you want to volunteer or how you just want to make a difference.
And then the bottom two categories, I kind of left blank because I always feel like if I’m just – like I create my goals right now but there’s always something that I’m going to want to add down the road and maybe if it doesn’t fit inside these categories, I’m just going to put it at the bottom uncategorized.
Those are my ten categories that I came up with to kind of pick your goals and figure out what you want to do. I put three lines underneath each category but I feel like maybe right now, you don’t have three family goals. Maybe you only have one or two, which is OK. You can always go back and revisit the goals.
Step one is writing this down and then you want to keep your goal tracker or your goal list somewhere where you’re going to constantly see it and constantly be reminded of everything that you’re working towards on a daily basis. Like when you’re feeling unmotivated at work, keep this near you and be reminded of the things that you want to accomplish and remember why you need to work hard. So for me, I keep this on my bulletin board like right behind me and it’s something that I see all the time when I’m working.
Tracking Your Personal Goals
Step one is writing everything down. Step two is keeping this tracker in place that is very visible, that you’re always going to see it and be reminded of what you need to do. Step three is to actually track your goals.
For example, one of my family goals and actually, these are not my real goals. I wasn’t comfortable putting my goals on camera so I came up with fake goals. So one of the goals in my fake category is I will babysit my niece and nephew at least three times. So how am I going to know if I accomplished that goal? Like I’m going to have to go back and count up the times that I babysat. So it requires a lot of work. So what you want to do is have a goal tracker, this is the second sheet. I normally keep these two together so I constantly know like where I’m at, what’s the status of the goal, or whatever.
Every time I babysit my niece and nephew, I’m going to come to my goal tracker and I’m going to write down, “OK. I babysat them on Tuesday, January 15th. And I’m just going to write babysat. Or I babysat them on February 19th and then just write babysat. And so, at the end of the three months, I can just come back to my goal tracker, come back to my list and just look, “OK, How many times did I babysit?” And I can just count them up and then check off my goal and know that I accomplished what I was looking to accomplish. So it’s easy way to know if you achieve the goal.
Set Goals Quarterly
So like I said, this is for three months. In March, I’m going to revisit this list and see like set my next three-month goals and maybe – I might not accomplish all these goals and if I don’t, I’m just going to take the goals I didn’t accomplish and I’m going to roll them over to quarter two and I’m going to try again to accomplish them. Of course, I’m going to work my hardest and try my best to accomplish everything in quarter one because that’s my goal but if it doesn’t happen, I’ll try again in quarter two. And then if those don’t happen in quarter two, then they roll to quarter three and so forth.
