Art projects can be fun. That is, if you know where all of your art supplies are. From scrapbooking supplies to sewing materials – art supplies come in many different sizes and shapes. And as with many hobbies, there are a myriad pieces, knick knacks, and accessories that come along with each project. Below are just a few of Color-Coded’s tips and tricks for getting your craft space perfectly organized.
Pegboard – Hanging a pegboard in your craft room allows you to utilize your vertical space and store common supplies such as scissors, tape and other crafting tools on various sized hooks. Pegboards are available at most hardware stores and can be cut to any size to meet your needs. Try painting the pegboard a solid color or add fun designs likes polka dots or stripes before mounting to the wall.
Glitter Galore– Try storing your glitter along the wall, literally. Magnetic strips are perfect for storing glitter in small canisters. Some of these canisters come with holes (for dispensing spices) that you could use to dispense your glitter. If you purchase canisters without holes, try drilling your own tiny holes depending on how large your glitter or decorating pieces are. If you’re not a glitter user, try using these functional and fabulous canisters for storing buttons, gems, paperclips, or any other tiny craft accessory.
Staying Neat While You Work– Crafts can be messy and we all know you don’t need something else to clean-up. With that said, try using flexible cutting boards in your workspace to clean-up messy glitter, small beads or gems. Using a flexible cutting board will allow you to literally pick up your workspace, bend it into a funnel to store the contents in a small jar/canister or even shake the cutting board over the trash can. Flexible cutting boards are perfect for craft spaces since they are low in price and high in functionality.
Beads, Beads, Beads!– A thrifty way to store beads is putting them in a divided prescription pill box, instead of purchasing a pricey compartmentalized box. These boxes work just the same and can be labeled on both the inside and outside. Try gluing one of each bead to the interior lid of the pill box to clearly display what type of bead is in each compartment. Once a bead needs replenishment, it will be clear where the appropriate bead should be stored.
Storing Ribbons – Ribbons tangle easily, unravel and can get lost rolling under furniture if dropped. To solve this common problem try hanging two nails in the wall 1-2 feet apart near or above your workspace (3M hooks work just as well). From one nail or hook, tie a long ribbon, cotton string or wire securely. String all of your ribbon spools onto this “laundry line” and then tie the other end of the ribbon/string/wire to the other nail/hook. Viola! You now have yourself a beautiful (and cheap!) display of your ribbon collection which are all within reach of your craft workspace.
