DIY Organization Ideas (Part 2)

Hi everyone. I’m Alejandra from Alejandra.TV. And in this video, I’m going to show you how to make your own organizing products with things you have already around the house. This is part 2 of my do it yourself organizing products video.

Let me show you the second half of all of the organizing products that I made with stuff from around the house. I’m doing this video to show you that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get organized. You can still get organized on a tiny budget with things you find around the house if you get creative. Let me show you all the things that I made!

DIY Holiday Storage

First, I took an apple container from Costco, and I put holiday ornaments inside. So now, I can just take this whole container and put it inside my holiday bin, and nothing is going to get broken or damaged while it’s in storage. So literally, it’s only the cost of buying apples. It’s so easy! When you’re finished with the apples, you just clean the container and then put your ornaments in it. And you can do this with other fragile decorations for around the house too. It’s cool because it has individual compartments.

DIY Craft Organizer

For my next DIY organizer, I took a Pringles container and covered it in pretty giraffe print contact paper. Then, I found some little containers to put inside from Dollar Tree. You get ten of those containers for just a dollar and they’re great for craft supplies & art supplies. Or, you can put office supplies in them. It’s just a cool way to organize small things from around your house! You could also store hardware in the containers. The total cost was for the containers inside, which is a dollar, and then obviously, for the Pringles.

DIY Photo Holder

The next thing I created was a photo holder. I took a piece of wood, sanded it, and painted it. Then I sanded it a second time to make it look distressed. Next I took a few clothes pins and painted & sanded them. Then I hot glue gunned the clothes pins to the piece of wood. And now, you could just hang the finished project on the wall to hold kid’s artwork, kid’s school work, photos, invitations, or cards. The only thing I purchased for this project was the clothes pins, which were rather cheap (you can find for like 50 for a dollar!)

DIY Filebox or Magazine Holder

Next, I took a beer box (with 24 or 12 beer bottles) and I covered it with gift wrap. And now, I put file folders in it. The file folders fit perfectly! You could also use it to hold your magazines.

DIY “Poly” Envelope

The next DIY organizer that I created was a “poly” envelope. To make it, I just used the wrapper from a chocolate bar. Since the outside wrapper never touched the chocolate bar (because the chocolate bar was covered in foil), the wrapper isn’t chocolatey. I covered the wrapper in decorative duct tape to make it nice and strong and colorful. And now inside my new envelope, I keep things like address labels and stamps. So it’s kind of like a poly envelope now, and it’s nice and durable. AND it was ONLY the cost of buying a chocolate bar.

DIY Ribbon Organizer

The next thing I created was a craft ribbon box holder/dispenser. I just took a small child’s shoe box and I put a shish-kebab stick through it (I literally just took a shish-kebab and poked it in though one end of the box and out through the other.) Then I put spools of ribbon across the shish-kebab stick and added little holes in the front of the box to feed the ribbon through.

Now when you do this, you have to make sure that the hole to feed the ribbon through is really small or else the ribbon is just going to fall back into the box. Since the holes are small, I can just pull the ribbon and it comes out nice and slow.

As for the sharp edge of the shish-kebab stick sticking out, I just covered it with a piece from a plastic wrap container (that I showed in the previous do it yourself video). I just glue gunned the little plastic tip right over the sharp point!

DIY Rag Holder

Then I took a large gold fish box that I got at the grocery store (from buying gold fish in bulk.) The box has a nice flap right at the top. Next, I covered the box in camouflage duct tape to make it nice and strong (and to make it a color.) Then I just put all of my old rags in the box (you could also use the box to store plastic bags under the sink or trash bags.) And now, I will put this rag box in my garage so Ed and I can have easy access to all of our rags!

If you don’t want to use big box like I used, you can also use a tissue box. It is the same concept, there is the opening at the top of the box where you can pull out your rags, it’s just a smaller box.

Creative Uses for Egg Cartons & Plastic Eggs

Next, I found a really nice egg container. When I first got it I was like, “We can’t throw this out.” So I saved it until I could figure out a way to reuse it. First, I put these Easter eggs inside to hold small items. If you don’t have Easter eggs to hold inside, you could totally put some hardware in the carton itself (like nails & screws) and keep it in the garage. You can also cut off the top and put it in your desk drawer for paper clips, push pins, and other little office supplies.

And then, if you are looking for a place to store all of your plastic Easter eggs when it’s not Easter time, you could store all your Easter eggs inside. It sounds kind of silly, I know – it’s just another idea.

Another idea for the plastic eggs, you could use them for travelling. I put a bracelet inside one of the eggs and then I put a rubber band across. So now, I can just toss the egg in my suitcase and the bracelet not going to get damaged or lost, since the shell is protecting the piece of jewelry inside and the rubber band is preventing the egg from opening. So you can put delicate items inside the plastic eggs and throw it in your suitcase, and it’s not going to break or get lost.

DIY Snack Bin

I also made my own snack bin. I took a clementine box and I painted it. Then I just put ribbon around it. And that was it! Now I have a cute little snack box. If you don’t want to create a snack box, you can also put it under your sink for sponges or for cleaning supplies, or you could put it in the garage for hardware, bottles,… There are so many cool things you can do with the box!

DIY Light Bulb Organizer

The last thing I created was a light bulb organizer, which I showed in my garage organization video a while ago. All I did was take a plastic shoe box, and you can also use a cardboard shoe box if you have one. I took Styrofoam cups that I had and I glued them down to a piece of cardboard that was cut to fit into the bottom of the box. And now, I can store all my light bulbs in this box, and they’re not going to get cracked, they’re not going to get damaged and they’re out of the way. They’re also very easy to access. Every time you go to open a light bulb box, at least for me, they’re always so complicated to open. This container just makes it really easy.

And you don’t have to store light bulbs in here. You could totally store Christmas ornaments or any other delicate item that you don’t to crack while in the storage.

So, that is all the organizing products that I’ve made with stuff from around the house. It just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get organized. If you get creative, and you think outside the box, you can make your own organizing products (and there’s just so much joy in making your own stuff and just admiring it afterwards!)
